The Tariff of Abominations: Regional Conflict and States Rights

The Tariff of Abominations was a protective tariff passed by Congress in 1828. While protecting northern industries the tariff raised the price of imported goods, making it difficult for southern farmers to sell their crops overseas. Southerners saw the tariff as a threat to their way of life, and many began to call for secession from the Union. The regional conflict that would lead to the Civil War comes to the forefront of American politics for the first time.
